Rin Tin Tiger – Toxic Pocketbook

Rin Tin Tiger’s album Toxic Pocketbook was released Tuesday, July 24th and it’s better than ever. Their music features nothing but guitars, a harmonica, drums and a beautiful voice singing. What you hear is what you get too, because no computers were used in the mixing of their album.

Toxic Pocketbook along with their last album starts with a Rin Tin Tiger jam session. Within seconds of “The Move Apart Parcel,” listeners will be banging their heads and will be dancing along with the music. Their music and lyrics can quickly go from upbeat and rocking with drums to slow and sad with just an acoustic guitar.

Kevin Sullivan (Guitar/Vocals), Sean E. Sullivan (Bass/Vocals), and Andrew Skewes-Cox (Drums/Vocals) make up Rin Tin Tiger. According to the biography on their website, “their music carries an emphasis on lyrics, organic musicianship and raw energy,” which describes them to a tee.

If you could just for once look hideous,
And I could just for once get serious
And we could be just like that Oregon Yard,
Over grown in the rain, yellowed in the sun,
Not pretending like we aren’t.

“Oregon Yard” starts playing simply with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. It sounds like a melancholy love song. Kevin Sullivan sings his heart out to a girl who he wishes could look hideous, so he can get down to business. He sings about being like a yard instead of pretending like nothing is wrong. The meaning of the lyrics are genuine and unexpected. Sullivan’s voice is so pure and beautiful especially in this track, because the song features him.

I aint got no friends, you know I aint got no money
I aint got no friends, I’m a bum dressed up in all my dirty laundry
I lost my job to some kid and no one else seems to want me
I aint got no love I aint got no sweetie
I aint got no love I’m a bum got my song and that’s all that seems to keep me company

The above lyrics are from their title track “Toxic Pocketbook.” It’s about a guy who  lost everything and has nothing but his music, which is sometimes all you need in life, your passion. Sullivan sings about writing it all down in your toxic pocketbook, and “if it’s gonna hurt boy, you better make it good.” The song and his voice sound passionate and rough almost like he’s reprimanding someone or himself.
